Farm Tables

Farm tables are one of our favorite things to build, they are what got us started and continue to be our most popular item. We'd love to build a custom farm table for you.

Here are a couple of things to keep in mind to get the dimensions right for your custom table.

How tall?

While tables can have different shapes and sizes, the standard height of a dining table is pretty consistent. To function well, it has to be high enough so that there is enough clearance space above the knees of those who gather round to eat or chat. To be able to dine comfortably the table should not be too high. For that reason most dining tables are 28" to 30" high.

How long and wide?

The dining table dimensions should be derived based on the amount of space that each person needs at the table. The minimum width required for a place setting is dictated by the average shoulder width of a person – 24 inches. The minimum depth required for a place setting is dictated by the size of a plate with cutlery and a glass, typically about 15 inches. Keep in mind that to have room for a serving platter or other dishes, you need to add a "shared space". So, that means that the standard tabletop width is between 36 and 42 inches wide.

Table Base Options

To make sure that you have plenty of room for your family and friends, we have a couple of different options for the base of your table.

Standard Table Legs

Standard table legs is a good option if you want to sit people at the heads of the table. As you can see from the photo below there is plenty of leg room for a person to sit at the head of the table. reclaimed-wood-pre-civil-war-farm-table-rustic-sons-of-sawdust-wood-working-Athens-Georgia-1

Stretcher Supports

We absolutely love the look of the stretcher supports! One thing to keep in mind though, if you intend for people to sit at the heads of the table, the stretcher support can sometimes get in the way. You'll notice in the photo below that there isn't much leg room at the heads of the table if you choose this option. reclaimed-wood-farm-table-athens-rustic-sons-of-sawdust-wood-working-Athens-Georgia-1

Trestle Base

The trestle base option is one of the most flexible designs. This type of base is great for sitting a large number of people around your table, due to the fact that there are no legs to get in the way. Paring this table with a full length bench guarantees that there's always room for one more person to squeeze in.

Variables

Last but not least, it's important for you to know that all of the wood that we use is reclaimed and at least 100 years old. This means that the wood varies from board to board, which also means that no two pieces that we build are every alike. We think that's pretty cool and it's one of the reasons we love working with reclaimed wood. We just want you to know this ahead of time to set your expectations appropriately. There will be variations from piece to piece, but we think that you'll probably be excited to know that. Getting a table from Sons of Sawdust means getting a table that's one-of-a-kind!

Round Tables

We love building round tables! With our round tables we use a pedestal base which allows more seating because it eliminates the legs that can get in the way of a chair. Here are some of the things that we need to know to get you a proper quote.

How tall?

The standard height of a dining table is pretty consistent. To function well, it has to be high enough so that there is enough clearance space above the knees of those who gather round to eat or chat. To be able to dine comfortably the table should not be too high. For that reason most dining tables are 28" to 30" high.

How big? What diameter?

A round table creates a cozy atmosphere, and it is easy to see every one at the table without having to lean over. However, this may not be the best shape for a large number of people. While it is easy to see everyone, it might not be as easy to carry on a conversation when you have to yell at someone 7 feet away from you on the other side of a large round table. A large round table also might not be best for smaller spaces. Here's a pretty good standard for choosing the right sized round table based on the number of people you would like to seat. 3 foot round table seats 3-4 people. 4 foot round table seats 4-5 people 5 foot round table seats 6-7 people 6 foot round table seats 8-9 people 7 foot round table seats 9-10 people Keep in mind that with the pedestal base it's easy to squeeze in more people if you need to. Also keep in mind that large round tables can make it difficult to reach for food. Rectangular shapes seem to work better for seating large crowds.

Thickness of the tabletop?

We can build your tabletop from 1" or 2" thick reclaimed wood. Below are a few photos to show you the difference.

Width of the tabletop planks?

We carry reclaimed wood in various widths from 4 inches all the way up to 10 inches or wider, do you have a preference for how wide you would like the planks of wood that will make up your tabletop? We don't always have all widths in stock but if you have a preference, let us know and we'll do our best to make it happen.

Coffee Tables

Whether you use it to rest your beverage or your legs on, our reclaimed wood coffee tables are a functional, and attractive. There are a few of things we'll need to know to get you the right custom coffee table.

What are the dimensions?

The ideal distance from the edge of the sofa to the edge of the table is 18 inches—close enough to reach for your drink or put a magazine down, but far enough to stretch out your legs. People often leave too much or not enough room. If you have other seats in the room that you want to reach the coffee table, follow the same 18-inch rule.

Height?

A coffee table's height is key. The surface should be about one or two inches lower than your sofa seat. Standard tables are 16 to 18 inches high, but if you have a higher couch or entertain a lot, consider a taller table—20 or 21 inches—so it's easy for guests to set down their dessert plate or cut a piece of cheese.

Length?

The guideline for choosing a coffee table length is to choose a table approximately one-half to two-thirds the length of the sofa.

Thickness of the tabletop?

We can build your tabletop from 1" or 2" thick reclaimed wood. We'll need to know what you prefer.

Width of the tabletop planks?

We carry reclaimed wood in various widths from 4 inches all the way up to 10 inches or wider, do you have a preference for how wide you would like the planks of wood that will make up your tabletop? We've even built coffee tables out of old doors! We don't always have all widths in stock but if you have a preference, let us know and we'll do our best to make it happen.

Shelf or no shelf?

There are 3 different options that we offer to finish out the bottom of your coffee table, no shelf, shelf, or stretcher support. Here are some images for the different types of coffee tables that we build.

What are the dimensions?

Sofa tables are designed to conceal the back side of a sofa that is not against a wall. They are usually 2/3 the length of the sofa and about the same height as the back of the sofa. Our sofa tables are typically between 32" - 34" tall.
