What is Shou Sugi Ban?

Shou Sugi Ban is a Traditional Japanese Wood Preservation Technique

What it is

Shou sugi ban, also called yakisugi, combines the Japanese words yaki (burnt, charred, or heat-treated) and sugi (cryptomeria japonica, or Japanese cedar). While “shou sugi ban” and “yakisugi” share the same kanji characters, they are pronounced differently.

How it works

This method involves charring the wood’s surface, which enhances its resistance to fire, water, sunlight, pests, mold, and rot. The burning process also accentuates the natural woodgrain.

Benefits

Shou sugi ban is low-maintenance and chemical-free. Over time, the wood develops a patina, and its color can be refreshed with periodic re-oiling.

Uses

Commonly applied for exterior cladding, shou sugi ban is also popular for siding and interior paneling.

Sustainability

While the technique itself is sustainable, the act of burning wood has potential environmental impacts.
